Democratic candidate for governor Gretchen Whitmer has earned the endorsement of the Michigan Fraternal Order of Police (MIFOP) for the November election.
“Although both candidates are well versed on law enforcement issues and would lead our state well, our committee ultimately decided to support Whitmer,” explains Mike Sauger, MFOP president. “It was a difficult decision with two well qualified candidates. Because she has worked with several governors over the years, we believe she will work most effectively on both sides of the aisle.”
Through a selection process that included in person interviews with both candidates at the MIFOP office, a five member committee made the endorsement decision on behalf of the MIFOP membership.
“We look forward to having a productive, open door relationship with the next governor,” says David Hiller, MIFOP executive director. “Law enforcement issues are central to protecting public safety and we appreciate the high priority that both candidates place on them.”
Founded in 1939, the Michigan chapter of the FOP is focused on protecting public safety. MIFOP is Michigan’s largest and oldest law enforcement organization with 7,500 active members and 3,000 associate members in more than 50 lodges throughout the state.
