The rising threat of  “cyberbullying” and “sexting” will go under the microscope under a proposal by state Sen. Gretchen Whitmer, D-East Lansing.
Whitmer today is asking Senate and House committees to investigate ways to protect young from these forms of digital abuse – in which teen-agers can be subjected to abusive comments on such sites as Facebook or sexual pictures sent by acquaintances.

State Sen. Gretchen Whitmer today announced she is working on a package of bills to address "sexting" and cyber bullying and called for House and Senate hearings on how to deal with the problem.
Whitmer's announcement follows several high profile Michigan cases and last week's release of a national Associated Press/MTV poll that found 50 percent of 14- to 24-year-olds had experienced some form of cyber abuse, and 30 percent had either sent or received nude photos on their cell phones or online.

Concerns about “sexting” and cyber abuse are the motivation of recent legislative action by state Sen. Gretchen Whitmer, D-East Lansing.
Whitmer announced Monday she is developing legislation to address explicit text messages — which could range from inappropriate comments to nude photos — and related problems among young adults. Whitmer called on the Michigan Legislature to hold hearings on how to deal with these issues.

Holiday shoppers deserve to have more of their hard-earned money go toward gifts for their families, instead of more gifts for bailed-out-banks.
That is why I am cautioning consumers to be aware of costly overdraft fees that can sneak up on you in the frenzy of a good sale. I am also pushing for specific reforms that would help rein in out-of-control fees and provide some transparency for consumers.

This holiday shopping season, the one that by tradition begins today, will be the last for long-standing bank overdraft fee practices that will likely hit hundreds of shoppers in the coming month.
By next November, strict federal rules for banks will have taken affect. Along with those regulations, Michigan banks also may soon have to comply with new state laws regarding overdraft fees.

Black Friday might be a little brighter during future holiday shopping seasons if legislation to protect consumers from excessive overdraft fees makes it through the Michigan Legislature.
Sen. Gretchen Whitmer, D-East Lansing, is developing legislation that would reduce overdraft fees and prevent multiple overdraft fees in a 24-hour period.
